RFLAN #35 - Report

Fantastic Weekend

Our attendees agree that this was one of the best RFLAN events to date.  RFLAN 35 rocked our brand new venue at Curtin Stadium in Bentley, so new that even Google Maps thinks it is still under construction.

The new venue added a large number of improvements for this event, including

  • New, bigger & comfier tables & chairs
  • A much nicer air conditioning (and heating!) system
  • Carpet under your feet, kept the place warmer & more comfortable
  • A roof-mounted projector and wall-mounted sound system
  • 2+ meters between table rows, no bumping chairs!
  • Better parking and security

Feedback in our forums is very positive:
"CARPET!! OMG CARPET! That was awesome..." --Progin
"Almost everything was perfect" --Dribbs
"Couches, they were awesome" --EmmaGebz
"Could buy hard drives/cables near the front (ed: Thanks to Austin Computers)" --YourGraveyard

Overall we had a lot of fun, there were definitely a few things we could improve upon, but rest assured RFLAN #36 will only be an improvement on this great success :-)

Competitions

This is what everyone is here for! We had a great range of competitions that ran over the weekend each receiving prizes donated by our sponsors.

Glimmer from Gamestah shoutcasted Call of Duty 4 and Team Fortress 2, but had to leave before finishing CS:S due to the delays in the competition timing. You can find these files at Gamestah's site.

This is the first time we've run Starcraft 2 as an Official competition and it was just as popular as last event, receiving over 38 entrants!
Semi and Grand Final matches were played on our stage using gaming systems loaned by PLE Computers, with a crowd looking on.

Sponsors

Big thanks to our sponsors for this event, returning sponsors ASUS, Fractal Designs, Thermaltake and Plantronics, and newer sponsors Austin Computers and PLE Computers. Everyone enjoyed the quality array of prizes such as the 4TB Nas from PLE and the 2TB Hard Drives from Austin! The prizes received are all detailed above in the competitions section.

Improvements

Although we work hard to plan and run a faultless event, there were a few teething issues which we will be addressing before our next event.

  • Internet - Unfortunately due to the new venue the internet connection used was quite slow as most of it had to be dedicated to Steam & BattleNet to allow our competitions to run smoothly, we tried our best to make sure everyone in their competitions were able to get in.  We will improve internet connectivity for next event.
  • Rebuild Glados - Some of you loved this, and some of you hated this, what a polarised event!  For the Glados haters, don't worry we won't be doing another Portal-themed competition, that was a Portal 2-launch special - and for those of you that missed out on the event we are sorry but we only had so many parts.. we will try and make this happen again so those that missed out can try again :-)
  • Network - Was a little slow/choppy for some, we have narrowed the main cause to faulty cables used by attendees sending bad packets, we have ideas to remedy that at future events
  • Tournament delays - Starcraft 2 was delayed due to the internet situation, Counter-Strike: Source was due to updates and mods affecting the server setup - we will work before next event to ensure that is not repeated.
  • Audio - Attendees appreciated the venue's over-head audio system, we plan to augment that by using our own speaker system on stage so the rest of the event isn't affected during use.
  • Lighting - We will look to manage the lighting levels better for next event
  • Glare - We did not expect the daylight glare to be as bad as it was for some, but we have ideas to counter that next event

In Closing

As always, a massive thanks to our generous sponsors, who donated over $4000 worth of prizes this event. Thankyou to all gamers who came and showed support to our organisation at our first event in the new Curtin Stadium. A well-deserved thankyou to the 15+ volunteers on the Redflag LANfest team, who give up an average of 60 hours each to make each event a success!

Special thanks to MadMockers (new admin), Evern, Mark, Steven and his Dad for helping out at our biggest event ever.

You can leave feedback in our forums at http://forums.rflan.org , and view photos of the event at http://www.rflan.org/gallery

See you in July!
